Brand Positioning & Communications Strategy for Dai-ichi Life Cambodia

Dai-ichi Life, Emotional Intelligence Studio
A comprehensive brand positioning and go-to-market communications programme for Dai-ichi Life Cambodia, helping the company differentiate itself in a competitive insurance market and strengthen its connection with Cambodian consumers. Grounded in primary consumer research — including Focus Group Discussions across three key audience segments — the work spanned brand strategy, narrative development, segment communications, and creative concept development.
Consumer Research & Market Insights

Conducted a programme of Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) across existing customers, potential customers, and sales agents to understand attitudes toward financial security, insurance, and brand perception. Research revealed that financial stability — and education as its primary enabler — sits at the heart of Cambodian life, with illness or loss of a breadwinner representing the greatest feared risk. Findings also identified key trust barriers among existing users, scepticism among potential customers, and relationship-building challenges faced by agents — all of which shaped the strategic and creative decisions that followed.

Brand Positioning Development

Defined a distinctive brand positioning for Dai-ichi in the Cambodian market, establishing the company as a Caretaker of Life — rooted in centuries-old Japanese values of Respect, Kindness, and Generosity. The positioning connects Dai-ichi's heritage to a universal human aspiration: the freedom to live life to its full potential and fulfil one's Ikigai. This framework gave the brand a meaningful point of difference from competitors such as Manulife and Prudential.

Brand Narrative & Message Hierarchy

Crafted a layered brand narrative anchored by two core messages: a primary line — “By your side, for Life” — communicating Dai-ichi’s role as a lifelong partner; and a secondary line — “You are #1 with Dai-ichi” — leveraging the literal meaning of the brand name. Supporting themes across all communications included life purpose, security for loved ones, peace of mind, and Japanese heritage, creating a coherent and emotionally resonant brand voice.

Segment Communications Strategy

Developed tailored messaging strategies for each of three key segments. For existing customers, the focus was on reinforcing trust through Dai-ichi's 122-year Japanese heritage and positioning the brand as a lifetime partner. For potential customers, the strategy centred on overcoming scepticism through real-life stories, social proof, and demonstrating the value of financial protection over reliance on loans. For sales agents, the approach repositioned them as trusted advisors — shifting from transactional selling to consultative, education-led relationship-building.

Communications Strategy

Built a two-pillar communications framework to guide all brand activity. The first pillar humanised sales agents by telling their real stories, positioning them as both the primary talent in brand content and as authentic voices for key messages — integrated into agent training programmes. The second pillar established ownership of the ‘Meaningful Life’ theme, anchoring communications in the territory of life purpose and Ikigai to sustain an ongoing dialogue with customers across a rational–emotional spectrum, from financial protection to life fulfilment.

Creative Concept Development

Developed a creative concept positioning Dai-ichi agents as ‘life coaches’ — guiding customers toward more meaningful choices. The concept was brought to life through two content directions: light-hearted, humorous customer stories featuring agents in everyday situations, and cinematic agent testimonials told through the eyes of their own families — illustrating how joining Dai-ichi gave agents a sense of purpose and transformed their lives.
